Cummerbunds are Coming.
Ready or not.
We saw scarves wrapped around the waist take off last summer, later evolving into shirts and sweaters layered on as temperatures dropped. Now, I present to you a new waist accent to consider: the cummerbund.

In my opinion, the cummerbund offers the perfect way to section an outfit without visually cutting it off. Mathematically to me, it allows for distinct parts that still flow into a continuous and cohesive look.

They’ve been making their way down the runways rather quickly. Notably, Conner Ives, Ralph Lauren, Carven, and Marni all featured cummerbunds, or cummerbund adjacent details in their recent collections.

While I’m still hunting for the perfect one (fingers crossed this cummerbund sash from Atelier Jea comes back in stock), I’ve fashioned waist belts and scarves to mimic the look in the meantime.

Now onto styling. As I mentioned before, I like using the effect of a cummerbund to break an outfit into distinct sections while keeping the overall look cohesive. This leather fringe belt, in the first look, helps add texture and separate the black satin from the belt itself, while it more clearly splits up the look above through color blocking.

And just for good measure some more inspo…
I have big plans for styling these so plenty of inspo to come. To be honest, I haven’t been this excited about an accessory since brooches.
